Refugees and other newcomers arriving in the United States have the human right to choose a community to live in — without facing discrimination. Unfortunately, some newcomers face difficulties in finding safe, affordable housing due to discriminatory practices. The federal Fair Housing Act was passed by Congress in 1968 to address this issue. This law not only prohibits housing discrimination based on factors like color, race, religion, sex, national origin, disability, and familial status, but it also emphasizes the right to choose.
